It is important to emphasize that the vast majority of patients who undergo a necklift or a facelift do not develop complications. Nevertheless, as with any surgical procedure, there are some risks inherent to the procedure.
Risks described in the medical literature
Damage to the motor facial nerve
This risk is related to most facial procedures given the physical relationship and proximity of this nerve to the surgical site and can potentially affect facial expression.
Damage to the sensory nerves of the face
This risk is related to most facial procedures given the physical relationship and proximity of this nerve to the surgical site and can potentially affect sensitivity in the face.
Infection and post-operative bleeding
As with any procedure, there is a risk of infection and post-operative bleeding. However, rigorous sterile procedures and careful post-operative follow-up significantly reduce the chance of these complications.
Delayed healing, deepithelialization or necrosis
Some patients may experience delayed healing, deepithelialization (loss of the surface layer of the skin), or in rare cases, partial or total skin necrosis. Strict post-operative care, smoking cessation and follow-up can minimize these risks.
Suboptimal scar healing
The result of scar formation can vary and although modern techniques are applied to keep scars as minimal as possible, scar healing in some patients may be suboptimal.
Residual or persistent asymmetry
Swelling always resolves asymmetrically. Residual asymmetry or persistence of existing asymmetries is always possible and depends on many factors. Facial rejuvenation surgery always aims to rejuvenate, not to change. Addressing pre-existing facial asymmetries falls into the realm of structural alteration rather than rejuvenation; Dr. Van Genechten will only address these in selected cases.
Sialocele
If a deep neck reduction is performed along with your necklift, there is a possibility of a saliva collection in the neck area, which is typically easy to treat.
Important to know
Aesthetic facial surgery does not aim to change or improve the patient's mood or emotional state.
It is crucial that patients communicate openly with Dr. Van Genechten about any concerns, questions, or anything else they would like to know more about. This promotes shared decision-making and contributes to a successful outcome of the procedure.
